Sweet Victory

I finally finished my WIP. Now I have three more unfinished pieces to work on! I get bored sometimes doing the same thing, so to keep it fresh, I have to set it aside and start a new one. I have a long list of pieces that I want to do. I really want to start drawing pieces that are more substantial in content - something with a story. I know I will always enjoy doing portraits, but I think I really need to stretch myself to grow. I also want to do some landscapes. I feel overwhelmed at the thought of doing one because there are so many different subjects within a landscape, but the area where I live is too inspiring to ignore the call! We live between two mountains in a community surrounded by farms - many tree farms and horse farms. It's beautiful. So one day I will answer the call the draw a landscape.

WIP

Okay, I'm on a roll with posting images! The image at the right is my work in progress (WIP). One of my high school classmates plays football for the Green Bay Packers and I was Googling him (being nosey!). I came upon this adorable photo of his daughter (2ish then) giving him a kiss. I thought the sweet innocence and femininity contrasted with the big tough football player made for an interesting composition. I made a few adjustments to the image to suit my taste and transferred the outline onto Bristol smooth. Now I am adding the values using graphite (2B mechanical) and a blending stump. This one has been relaxing so far since there are no teeth or eyes to worry about. It is my first with afro hair and I have enjoyed the outcome so far. I think I will keep this one for myself!

Recent Works

The two drawings to the right and below my profile window are my two most recent works.  For the first, I used two different reference photos and placed both subjects together.  You may notice the difference between the two pieces in the rendering of the skin.  Vellum has a bit of a texture to it, while smooth is just that - smooth.  I am learning new techniques and materials with almost every piece I do.  I try to keep up with some of the drawing message boards, gaining perspective from other artists.  The internet has been a valuable tool for me in this respect.

Welcome!

Thanks for viewing my new blog spot!  I decided that I wanted a place where I could write and post my art work and doings until I have a website up and running.  Here you can take a peek at some things I have already completed as well as WIPs (works in progress).  I will try to update the images frequently, but with a full time job and household to care for, it may be a challenge!
